Test Exemptions

UHCL offers exemptions for applicants who meet the criteria listed below.

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited U.S. institution.
  • An earned M.D., D.D.S., or J.D. with a license to practice in the United States.

Exemptions below are by academic college and are only pertinent for that specific college. Be sure you know which academic college has your program of interest.

  College of Business
 

Exemptions are made for applicants who have earned a graduate degree in Business Administration from an institution accredited by AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business).

College of Business will also provide examination waivers for the following programs if they meet all of the requirements below:

Applicants to MBA, MA-HRM, MS-Environmental Management, MHA and MHA/MBA programs must have the following:

  • 3.000 cumulative GPA on last 60 hours of coursework, have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a country where English is the native language and meet their specific program's graduate admission criteria; or they must have earned a graduate; or,
  • Earned a graduate or professional degree from a country where English is the native language.

Applicants to the MS-Finance program must have the following:

  • 3.250 cumulative GPA on last 60 hours of coursework, have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a country where English is the native language and meet the MS-Finance program's graduate admission criteria; or,
  • Earned a graduate or professional degree from a country where English is the native language.
  College of Human Sciences and Humanities
 

With the exception of General Psychology, non-clinical programs are not required to take the GRE if one of the following criteria listed below is met. Applied Behavioral Analysis and General Psychology majors are required to submit a GRE score.

  • 3.0 or higher in the last 60 hours of course work
  • Master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • J.D. degree from a U.S. accredited law school
  College of Science and Engineering
  A graduate acceptance committee of SCE may request an exemption from the Dean for an applicant who has an earned graduate degree in an appropriate field of study from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  College of Education
  Counseling and Doctoral program applicants are required to submit a current GRE score. All other graduate education applicants are waived from taking the GRE if they have a 3.0 in their last 60 hours on an earned bachelor's or higher degree.

Transfer Credit

Graduate students must complete at least 30 hours in residence. The final 24 hours of the degree must also be taken in residence.

  • No more than 12 hours can be transferred and applied toward a graduate degree program. Some programs have a limit of six hours.
  • Only courses with grades of B- or higher may be transferred.
  • Credits previously used towards completion of an earned graduate degree will not be used for an additional degree.
  • The Dean of your academic program determines whether courses previously taken are pertinent to the current degree objective.
  • Courses taken more than five years prior to graduate admission may not be counted towards fulfilling the required number of hours unless approved by the Dean.
