Congratulations to Dr. Jiang Lu, Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering in the College of Computer Science and Engineering, as the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s nominee for the 2019-2020 Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award. The Piper Professor Award is given by the State of Texas for superior teaching at the college level. We wish Dr. Lu good fortune for his application to the state level award. We also recognize the following UHCL faculty for being a semi-finalists for this nomination for their excellent teaching: Dr. Gary Boetticher, Dr. Leslie Gauna, Dr. Khondker Hasan, and Dr. Unal “Zak” Sakoglu.
Thank you to Dr. Maria Curtis, Associate Professor of Anthropology, for coordinating the 10th Annual Conference of the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center at UHCL this October. This year’s conference theme was “Energy and Environmental Stewardship: Oman and the U.S.”
We appreciate the work of Dr. Gene Shan, Assistant Professor of Engineering Management, and Dr. Isabelle Kusters. Assistant Professor of Public Health. They recently received a Center for Faculty Development grant to attend a teaching conference and bring back information to the UHCL faculty. Dr. Shan organized a presentation about improving online discussions, and Dr. Kusters led a discussion about reducing microaggressions in the classroom.
Good job to Dr. William Amonette and the rest of UHCL’s Exercise and Nutritional Health Institute for organizing the Low Carb Houston Conference in the Bayou Building this October. Dr. Amonette and the planning committee are getting ready for an even larger event in 2020.
