Jonathan Zophy was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended Hope College, Michigan State, and The Ohio State University, where he earned his Master of Arts and doctorate in European history. He has taught at Ohio State, Lane College, the University of Maryland in Europe, Carthage College, University of West Florida, and since 1988, University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Zophy is a fellow and past officer of the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference and a past officer of the Society for Reformation Research. He has published eight books, plus numerous book chapters, articles, and reviews. He won the campus Piper Award for 1993 and the President’s Distinguished Research Award for 1999. On campus he founded and advises both the History Club and the campus chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the history honorary society.
