Show Your Hawk Pride

At UHCL, school spirit and traditions are defining aspects of our campus culture. We take every opportunity to display our pride and passion for our university, from our love for our mascot, Hunter the Hawk, to wearing blue and green every Wednesday. We proudly claim our position as a nationally renowned leader in higher education, research and public service. UHCL Hawks are strong, ambitious and prepared to make their community a better place.

  Blue and Green Wednesday Activities

On Wednesdays, we wear blue and green! Throughout the year, Student Involvement and Leadership hosts various activities centered on the university’s official school colors. The activities range from free spirit T-shirt giveaways to seasonal refreshments and food. Blue and green activities are included in other Student Involvement and Leadership programs as well.

Stay tuned, and show off your school spirit every Wednesday with #BlueandGreenWednesday.

  Chili Cook-Off

The Chili Cook-Off is the longest-standing tradition at UHCL. Held every spring, the cook-off welcomes students, faculty, staff and the community to campus for chili tastings, food, music and fun. Members of the university can form teams and submit their chili recipes for a chance at bragging rights. And to add to the fun, Hunter, our beloved mascot, celebrates his birthday at the cook-off! This is a great opportunity to bring your family and friends to show them what campus life is all about.

  Spirit Week

Every October, UHCL celebrates Spirit Week, a week filled with events and activities aimed at school spirit and campus pride. In addition to I Heart UHCL Day, other related programs take place throughout the week, ranging from Grad Fest to graduation cap decorating, to games, evening refreshment programs, and community service events. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to connect with other Hawks and show your school spirit.

  I Heart UHCL Day

Don’t hide your pride; show your love for UHCL! I Heart UHCL Day takes place every year as part of Spirit Week in October. This tradition brings the entire campus community together to celebrate their "love" for the institution. Campus offices enter decoration contests for a chance to not only win bragging rights, but to help paint the campus in blue and green. The day is also filled with games, refreshments, and spirit giveaways to help enhance school spirit.

  Lighting of the Letters
Every November, we celebrate the holiday season by lighting up the UHCL letters located near the Alumni Plaza and Student Parking Lot D. Hosted by the Hawk Spirit and Traditions Council, this celebration also includes other fun activities ranging from holiday performances, toy drop-offs, and giveaways.

Hawk Spirit & Traditions Council

The Hawk Spirit & Traditions Council (HSTC) is a student organization that encourages and supports the creation, promotion and preservation of pride at UHCL. HSTC hosts educational and social programming to showcase UHCL’s spirit and traditions, such as the annual Lighting of the Letters in November. You can request to join HSTC through UHCL GetInvolved.
